Corporate real-estate teams pitched open floor plans as a way to boost spontaneous, face-to-face collaboration. Ethan Bernstein and Stephen Turban tracked two Fortune 500 headquarters as they switched to open-plan layouts. Employees wore sociometric badges over two three-week periods in 2018, before and after the switch. Face-to-face interaction time fell 72%, from about 5.8 to 1.7 hours per person per day. Email volume rose 56% and instant messaging rose 67% over the same period. Workers withdrew behind screens rather than collaborating in person once the walls came down.

Underrated · Sleep

Hustle-culture management norms treat sleep as a personal indulgence, not a productivity lever. Marco Hafner and colleagues at RAND Europe modelled the economic cost of insufficient sleep in 2016. The study covered five countries: the US, UK, Canada, Germany and Japan. Insufficient sleep costs the US economy up to $411 billion a year, 2.28% of GDP. The same shortfall costs the US about 1.2 million lost working days annually. Raising average sleep from under six hours to six-to-seven hours could add $226.4 billion to the US economy alone.

The gap

An open floor plan is visible in a single photograph: glass walls, no cubicles, a visible executive decision. A well-rested employee produces no photograph, no press release and no line item in a design budget. The dollar figures for sleep are modelled associations built on risk multipliers, not proven by a controlled trial, so their size is illustrative rather than exact. The open-plan result itself is not seriously disputed; design consultants argue effects depend on implementation, such as acoustic zoning, and may not generalise to every layout.

Example: One reform removed the walls and cut face-to-face contact by nearly three-quarters; the other reform asks for nothing louder than going to bed an hour earlier.

Verdict. Open-plan offices measurably reduced the collaboration they were built to increase; sleep measurably raises output that almost nobody schedules for it.

Overturned if: a badge-tracked study at other firms finds open-plan layouts raising face-to-face contact, or a controlled trial finds no productivity gain from added sleep once confounds are removed.
