THE SHORTEST PATH — A History of the Art and Science of Problem-Solving

Gordium, 333 BC

In the old capital of Phrygia, in what is now central Turkey, an ox-cart stood in the citadel with its yoke lashed to a pole by a knot of cornel bark. The bark had hardened over generations until the knot was a single woody mass with no visible ends. An oracle had attached a promise to it: whoever undid the knot would rule Asia.

Alexander of Macedon arrived that year, twenty-three years old and mid-conquest, and could not afford to walk away from a public prophecy. The ancient sources preserve two versions of what happened next, and the disagreement between them is worth more than either story alone.

In the version most people know — the one Plutarch says most writers reported — Alexander studied the knot, found no ends to work with, drew his sword, and cut it through (Plutarch, Life of Alexander 18). In the second version, which Arrian attributes to Aristobulus — an engineer who was actually on the campaign — Alexander did something quieter: he pulled out the wooden pin that ran through the pole and held the whole assembly together. The yoke slid free. The knot, still tied, no longer fastened anything (Arrian, Anabasis 2.3).

(Arrian, Anabasis 2.3)

Notice what neither version contains: Alexander untying the knot. Both accounts agree that he refused the problem as offered. The oracle said undo the knot; everyone before him had heard untie it by hand and failed. Alexander — by blade or by pin — heard only make the knot irrelevant, and succeeded in seconds at a task that had defeated petitioners for generations.

The sword version celebrates force. The pin version celebrates insight. But the decisive move in both is the same, and it happened before anyone touched the rope: a decision about what the problem actually was. That move — made deliberately, named, studied, taught, and eventually mechanized — is what this book is about.

What a problem is

We use the word "problem" loosely, for everything from a flat tire to a failing marriage to Fermat's Last Theorem. The scientific study of solving begins by tightening it. The Gestalt psychologist Karl Duncker, writing in 1945, gave the definition the field still leans on: a problem exists when a living creature has a goal but does not know how the goal is to be reached (Duncker, On Problem-Solving, 1945). The key word is know. A flat tire is not a problem for a mechanic — it is a task, a known procedure executed with known tools. It becomes a problem the moment the jack is missing and nothing in memory supplies the next step.

A problem, then, is a gap with no visible bridge: a present state, a desired state, and no ready-made route between them. This definition does something useful — it makes "problem" a relationship between a situation and a solver, not a property of the situation alone. The same knot is a wall to one mind and a doorway to another. The entire discipline lives in that difference.

In 1972, after fifteen years of watching people solve puzzles while thinking aloud, Allen Newell and Herbert Simon gave the definition its formal skeleton in Human Problem Solving, one of the foundational works of cognitive science (Newell & Simon, 1972). A problem, they proposed, can be described as a problem space: a set of states (every configuration the situation could be in), a set of operators (every legal move that transforms one state into another), an initial state, and a goal state. Solving is search: finding a sequence of operators — a path — from where you are to where you want to be.

This sounds like an analogy. It is not. It is a formalism, and it turned out to be astonishingly general. A chess position, a half-finished proof, a molecule to synthesize, a route through a city, a debugging session, a legal argument — each fits the frame: states, moves, start, goal. When Newell and Simon built the first artificial-intelligence programs on this idea in the late 1950s, the programs worked, which is the hardest kind of evidence that a definition has caught something real. The same skeleton now runs inside route planners, theorem provers, and the game engines that beat world champions. Chapter 05 tells that story in full.

The problem-space view also explains, in one stroke, why problems are hard. The spaces are unimaginably large. Chess has more possible games than there are atoms in the observable universe. The space of possible proofs, or possible protein folds, or possible business strategies, is worse. No solver — human or machine — searches these spaces exhaustively. Anyone who solves anything nontrivial is doing something cleverer than looking everywhere.

The thesis of this book

What is the cleverer thing? A century and a half of mathematics, psychology, wartime engineering, and now machine intelligence converges on an answer that can be said in one sentence:

Great solvers do not search harder; they change the space until the path is short.

Difficulty is not a fixed property of a problem. Difficulty lives in the representation — in which states you bother to distinguish, which operators you allow yourself, and what you take the goal to be. Change any of those, and a maze can collapse into a corridor.

The book in your hands is a history of that collapse, performed again and again by the best minds of every era:

  • Leonhard Euler, asked whether a stroller could cross each of Königsberg's seven bridges exactly once, threw away the city — the streets, the water, the geography — until only dots and lines remained, and in that stripped space the answer became a two-line argument. Graph theory was the residue of his reframing (chapter 02).
  • John Snow, facing a cholera epidemic that the best minds of 1854 attributed to bad air, changed what a state was: not a patient, but an address. Plotted on a map, the deaths encircled a single water pump on Broad Street (chapter 07).
  • The physicists and economists of the 1940s discovered that thousands of apparently different questions — feeding an army cheaply, routing convoys, scheduling factories — were one question wearing different clothes, and built a single mathematical engine to answer all of them (chapter 04).
  • A team at DeepMind, facing the fifty-year-old problem of predicting how a protein folds, stopped trying to simulate the physics and recast folding as a pattern-completion problem over evolutionary history — and effectively closed the problem in a single year (chapter 08).

Different centuries, different fields, one silhouette: the space changes, then the walk is short.

There is a hard version of this claim and a soft version. The soft version says reframing is one useful trick among many. The hard version — the one this book defends — says reframing is the central act, and that most of what we call genius in solving is skill at choosing spaces, with the searching itself almost an afterthought. The evidence for the hard version fills the chapters ahead; the honest limits of it (some spaces resist all compression — that is chapter 06, on the mathematics of genuine hardness) are part of the story too.

Why "shortest"

The title needs defending. Why prize the shortest path? Isn't any path to the goal a solution?

Three reasons, in ascending order of depth.

First, economy is survival. Every real solver — a person, a company, an algorithm on a deadline — pays for search in time, money, or attention. The history of operations research (chapter 04) is the history of shaving paths because the shavings were worth fortunes and, in wartime, lives.

Second, the short path is a certificate of understanding. A thousand-step solution can be stumbled into; a three-step solution to the same problem means the solver saw structure the stumbler missed. When Gauss, as a schoolboy, summed the numbers 1 to 100 in seconds by pairing them into fifty 101s, the answer was worth nothing — any drudge could reach it — but the route proved he had seen what addition actually is. Teachers, examiners, and referees have always graded the path, not the destination, and they are right to.

Third — and this is the strangest fact the book has to offer — the short path is how truth feels. Mathematicians speak of elegant proofs with the vocabulary of aesthetics, and Paul Erdős spoke of "The Book" in which God keeps the perfect proof of each theorem. This is not decoration. Chapter 09 argues, with support from information theory and from the neuroscience of insight, that the experience of beauty in a solution is the felt signal of compression — of a representation snapping into a form where the answer is nearly free. The shortest path is not just cheap. It is what understanding is, seen from inside.

One warning, before the warm feeling settles: the shortest path is almost never the first one found. It is usually cut after someone has hacked through the long way — Euler's two-liner came after the strollers of Königsberg had worn out their shoes. Elegance is typically a second draft. That, too, is a law of this science, and the galleries of chapters 07 and 08 will show it operating in every century.

Four traditions, one science

Is there really a science here — or just a shelf of anecdotes about clever people? The skeptic's question deserves a straight answer, and the answer is the structure of this book.

The study of solving grew up four times, in four communities that barely read each other:

  1. The mathematicians' tradition asked: can the making of discoveries be taught? It runs from the compiled methods of Egyptian and Greek antiquity, through Descartes' dream of a universal method, to George Pólya's How to Solve It — the 1945 handbook that gave heuristics their modern names and became, decades later, required reading for the builders of artificial intelligence. Chapters 01–03.
  2. The psychologists' tradition asked: what actually happens in a head when the answer arrives? From the Gestalt school's experiments on insight, through Newell and Simon's problem spaces, to the modern neuroscience that can watch the "aha" moment on an EEG trace. Chapters 03 and 09.
  3. The engineers' tradition asked: can solving be made industrial — systematic, optimal, provable? Born in the operational research cells of the Second World War, it produced linear programming, dynamic programming, the shortest-path algorithms that run inside every navigation app, and, at its philosophical peak, the theory of computational complexity: a mathematics of hardness itself, which proved that some spaces cannot be compressed by anyone, ever. Chapters 04–06.
  4. The machines' tradition is the youngest: solvers that are not us. It began the moment Newell and Simon's programs first worked, and it has now produced systems that find paths no human has ever walked — move 37, novel proofs, folded proteins. What those systems still cannot do, and what that means for anyone who solves for a living, is the business of chapter 10.

Four traditions, four vocabularies, one subject. The claim that they form a single science rests on how well their central ideas translate into one another — heuristic search, insight as restructuring, optimization, representation change — and the book is, among other things, a running demonstration of that translation.

How to read this book

The chapters are arranged in four movements, and a coda:

  • I · Origins (01–03): how humanity noticed that method itself could be an object — made, named, improved, and taught. From the scribes of the Rhind papyrus to Pólya's heuristics.
  • II · The Formal Sciences (04–06): how solving became engineering — optimization, algorithms, and the wall of provable hardness where engineering ends.
  • III · The Gallery (07–08): ten great solves across four centuries, each told around the single move that cracked it. The theory made flesh.
  • IV · Beauty and the Future (09–10): why the short path feels the way it does, and what happens to human solvers now that machines search better than we do.
  • Coda (99): the whole book folded into a practice — a vocabulary of moves and a thirty-day route for making them reflexes.

One structural device runs through everything, and you should know it now. Every chapter ends by naming its Move — the single transferable act that its history teaches, stated in a form you can actually use on Monday morning. The moves accumulate. By the coda you will hold the complete kit, and the closing chapter exists to turn the kit from vocabulary into reflex. Read for the stories if you like; the moves are the cargo.

A note on evidence, because this library has standards: every dated claim, quotation, and case in this book carries a source, checked at the time of writing. Where the historical record is genuinely uncertain — as with the sword and the pin at Gordium — the uncertainty is stated rather than smoothed over. A history of clear thinking should not itself cheat.

The Move

Every chapter of this book closes the same way. Here is the first entry in the kit.

Move 00 — Question the frame before touching the rope.

When a problem arrives, it arrives pre-framed: someone — a customer, a boss, a textbook, your own habit — has already decided what the states are, what moves are legal, and what counts as solved. The frame reaches you disguised as reality. Generations failed at Gordium because they accepted a rule no oracle had actually spoken: by hand, ends found, rope intact.

So, before searching — before any cleverness at all — interrogate the frame:

  • What would count as solved? Say it precisely. The oracle graded outcomes ("the knot is undone"), not procedures.
  • Which constraints are real, and which are habit wearing a uniform? For each rule you are obeying, ask: who set this, and does it bind me?
  • Am I solving the problem, or the problem's packaging?

Alexander's blade and Aristobulus' pin are the same move in different costumes: both attack the frame, not the knot. Everything else in this book — Euler's dots, Snow's map, Bellman's recursions, move 37 — is this move, deepened, varied, formalized, and finally taught to machines.

The knot is the problem as handed to you. The path is yours to choose.

Next — Chapter 01 · The First Methods: four thousand years ago, someone first wrote a solution down not to record the answer, but to teach the route. Method became an object. Everything else followed.
